#BoatShopping #boatlife #uncertainty
Are you ready to dive into boat life headfirst but feeling uncertain because of the pandemic? Well, you aren't the only one! Here's what we've learned.
The world has never been more uncertain. 2020 has been a washing machine of emotions and a mental earthquake that's cracked our sense of safety, security, and freedom wide open.
It's all caused a bit of a stir. Some people are experiencing an awakening and an invigorated motivation to make their dream life happen. Others were well underway towards their goal and are now questioning if they should proceed forward.
At this point, if you’re not already living your dream lifestyle, you’re probably asking yourself “why not?”. And if you aren’t, you should be.
You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t dreaming about buying a boat or at least embarking on some sort of adventure. We want to help encourage those dreams, which is why we decided to start this interview series.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Hey friends, so we are NOT selling our boat. We just got home! But, we've had a lot of conversations with those of you struggling with purchasing right now or wanting to know if it's a good time to buy. The world is such a different place from when we bought our boat. This is why we reached out to our old friend Kent to get an insider perspective on the market. Hope it helps those of you thinking of buying right now.

I heard the Miami boat show next February has been canceled. Hearing various reasons as to why. Some say Covid some say dealers/builders don’t have the inventory. FLIBS just happened last week. Seems odd to cancel the Miami show that’s 3 months away.

@Sailing Solo yea, in the coming years there will be a massive spike in evictions and foreclosures. Defaulting on loans. I know just how cheap stuff can be when it ends up at one of those auctions. I would not be surprised to see boats going to 10% of their value just to get it off the lot. But it depends on where.

@Sailing Solo I think is a safe to write that you're quite pessimistic about the future. It's true that is going to take a very long time. My sister who works in Danish Public Healthcare System has said that there are 40 mutations of SARS-CoV2 (coronavirus 2). Usually, any virus becomes weaker, when it mutates.

I own a 56’Catamaran owners version and have been sailing for a few years and love the adventure. The issue I have now is that this is a sellers market and the price for my boat is more than what I have invested. So i am rethinking the boating life, and more of the motorcycle, hiking, or expat life. I love what i am doing and love the constant change of scenery and relaxed life as well as the constant maintenance(AKA working in paradise). I have met some amazing people in this adventure and look forward to circumnavigating but I am still young and have the ability later in life when the market changes to a buyers market to shift back. You two ruined this for me as you stated life does not change so grab it now. Damn you. :)

Howdy Jason and Nikki from Dallas TX. My Wife and I just bought a travel trailer back in May. The RV industry is in the same position as the Marine industry due to the pandemic. People have been buying RV's like crazy this year, the factories are back logged due to the pandemic and new RVs are becoming harder to find. We have noticed in the State Parks in Texas that most of the rigs we're seeing have buyer tags on them, we are also finding it more and more difficult to get reservations in the State Parks as they have been limiting capacity and more and more people are camping because they don't want to fly or stay in a hotel during the pandemic. I was wanting to buy a Catamaran but I just could not get her to buy off on the idea so I compromised and went along with her dream of a travel trailer. We are planing on retiring early next year and setting out to see the country by land, we will probably upgrade our tow vehicle at that time and also move up to a 5th wheel trailer.

Your broker sounds a bit slimy - basically I’ll sell anything to anyone the easier the better. As a sales professional you want to take care of both buyer and seller and be honest and make sure everyone is treated fairly. I didn’t get that from your guy...

Kent and the Wynns have been friends since he helped them buy Curiosity and they rib him about trying to up-sell them all the time. I think you're just seeing a natural friendship/camaraderie there, playing on the sterotype that salesmen will go to any lengths to sell their product. His company, Just Catamarans, is a premier brokerage and you don't build a premier business by being slimy. Curious Minion

@Gone with the Wynns Thank you, Curious. The Wynns are as close to people I know who purchased a boat. I don't know anyone else. And I don't know of sailing forums, so I if you, Minion, or others run across some information sources that you can recommend, I am appreciative. Right now, youtube is the only place I know to start. I am a "friend of friends" of the Wynns (25 year friends with Joel and Capt Kathy of Havassu who taught them to dive, personal friends with Wheeling Nina and Paul, etc.) I attempted emailing them directly, but could not find a personal email address, so I am appreciative of your reply to my comment. Take good care, Suzanne

If you know other people who've recently purchased you could ask for recommendations. If you're on some sort of sailing forum and there's an appropriate section for buy/sell you could ask there for recommendations in your area. If you can't get personal recommendations like that, you might try searching for a broker that is "nationwide" and maintains many offices. Think of that as being a national real estate broker chain like Coldwell Banker or ReMax. At least that nationwide company will have some standards and you'll have a decent chance of getting a good broker. Good luck with it! Curious Minion

Marine engineers are flat out, try getting a diesel mechanic, outboard repair service people are flat out waiting lists to get work done. I know 3 people who sold their monohulls in less than 2 days and had a list of buyers waiting for call backs. One had to be trucked out because of travel restrictions, but the buyers are doing that. All mostly to go anywhere but sit around waiting. There is a simple maxim. Good boats sell fast. Remember Good Boats Sell Fast - that's the title. I've not seen a good boat on the list of many brokers because they are gone already.

  • Richard Burgmann

So similar story here in Australia. I've worked in my office maybe 6 days since March 2020, it's now November 2020. Working from home for many of the 12.5 million adult workers (those that still have jobs) is the "new" normal. So what do you do when you DON'T have to commute to work? Move out of the CBD to the country or the coast. To buy or rent in the regions there are from 25 to 50 people for every rental property in New South Wales. I expect it is a similar story elsewhere in the country. I don't think we in Australia will completely go back to the old ways, but there will be a much greater opportunity for people to be able to live near where they work. This will be a great boon to service workers who normally cannot afford to live near the CBD (prices are dropping), people like me can work anywhere there is high speed internet. Some still need to work in offices, but this is maybe 20 percent of the workforce. So Kent is spot on, it is a sellers market whether it's a boat, van or regional getaway.

These are interesting times. If considering a boat that you cannot easily travel to visually inspect, request 50 non-pro pictures. If longer than 50 feet request an additional 10 pictures per foot. NOT FROM THE SELLER. Request these from a local shop. Marine technicians, albeit there is a significant shortage love to do something different - and this doesn't get their hands dirty. open a work order and pay for this service.. WHATEVER you pay them it is less than the time and expense to visit the boat. IF THEY MISS ANY PORTION OF THE BOAT. You will notice. Ask them to go back and ask them why. The last thing you want is 50 more pro pictures. I have requested 50 pictures since digital cameras and email can easily handle this event in my industry. Corporate Jet Sales. It will easily work in marine and RV as well. What if they won't produce 50+ pictures - find the next asset.

During this pandemic, one gets a lot of time to think about one's life. Due to pure boredom - during the lockdown here in Denmark - I watched a lot sailing videos. First was binge watching SV Delos videos - that took 3 weeks. Much later - a month or so ago - I decided to built my own *steel* boat (I like steel) - because the only boat I can afford is older than 1980, meaning that everything on the boat is as old as when I was 10 years old. Currently I am hunting down a boat plan. It isn't easy, because my red flags are "helmstation is only outside and/or unprotected", "spade rudder", and "any kind of keel that is a or look like a fin keel". I prefer a boat with a twin keel, and a *modern* junk rig, where modern makes it good at sailing windward.

All I could think while the guy was saying how great sales of boats where going was yeah sure socialism for the top 10% of Americans by the government artificially pumping in trillions into the Wall Street and the stock market is what keeping sales of boats up right now. This can't go on forever. Sooner or later reality will set in and you are going to see a crash like never before. Better to socialize the bottom 90% of Americans and have a slower or no luxury boat market. Why? Because bailing out the people instead of Wall Street means the people can pay their bills and have a place to live.

Catamarans are well out of my price range, but I've been looking for a 46-52' monohull on the west coast for the last two years. I can tell you that boat inventory evaporated after the pandemic - boats sold crazy fast. Broker after broker out here told me it was a "red hot" 'market. Boats that I'd noted on Yachtworld for years suddenly went "Pending" - even some ugly ones. Now prices have gone up, and boats requiring some major work (teak decks need replacing, etc.) are selling fast. At least on the west coast, it is definitely a "seller's market".

Hi. Not looking to buy a boat, quite happy with our Winnebago thank you! But we watch all your videos because we love your happy smiling faces, and it feels like you could make watching paint dry interesting. Thanks for being you!

NZ house and boat sales have taken off as well. This much activity in the market may turn the recession around fast. Increase in supply is the only way to slow it down, which ain't coming anytime soon looks like.

Wales play the best rugby! The wine is not so great (I only know of one vinyard - in Pembrokeshire)

Your broker / salesman Kent has truly embodied the phrase "service AFTER the sale". You don't see this much in any sales driven industry. Most car dealerships don't know your name after taking delivery.

As an accountant, “sellers’ market” makes me want to say “sell! sell! sell!” Buy again when the market inevitably flips.

If Jeff Allen was selling boats... Kent Grimbeek is his twin. And he is funny as hell. Don't know what I am on about? Watch this, promise you will enjoy it :) usplan.info/two/video/yKSfzXxzZ6exa4g.html

Great information. Not surprising that it's a sellers market. Everything "outdoor recreational", is selling like mad. I'd really like to know what's going to happen to the market, 2 years from now, when some of the new boaters discover that it's not all beaches and bikinis? Got any thoughts?

Hi you two. Jason, have you just had a big night on the fire water or just not sleeping well, because it sure looked like you were starting to nod off towards the end of the interview 😄😁😄😁

Thanks! I'm on the fence (about selling everything and buying a cruising yacht)...but have been wondering if now is a good time...very good video! Love the humor! Over here in North Carolina, grinning (and rationalizing)...and I have a small powerboat I'd like to sell

You two are amazing how you finish each others sentences as if it's been rehearsed. Homogenisation in action.
