This week we tackle a steering issue that has been plaguing us since our Pacific crossing. We reinstall the fuel tanks, restock the freezer, gain back a modern-day luxury, and service the engines. We're making progress my friends, very good progress!
🍍 Food Prep
I am a big fan of reusable silicone bags. I have them in all shapes and sizes. I prefer them over classic Tupperware style containers. There are no lids to fiddle with, they take up less storage space, they are plastic-free (made of 100% silicone), they're oven and freezer safe too.
Best silicone bags: amzn.to/36hAY95
⛽ Fuel Tank Fix
A huge thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. As mentioned, our fave and wish-we-had-access-to product is the fuel tank liner. We will most likely remove the tanks and coat them with a similar product once we get to New Zealand or Australia.

WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Hay Jason, Nikki, Love watching your journey and seeing your overhaul and maintenance of the steering system. The pulleys look worn and quite thin, did you check the correct depth of wire rope sheaves? You can find this on google or with the manufactures. The pulley can collapse if the limit becomes too thin. Also for the correct holding strength. wire rope grips should have 3 rope grips, not 2. If it was me I would definitely have spare pulley’s cables and rope grips. Not the sort of failure you need to tackle on an ocean trip.👍 Also for easier maintenance think I would use SS bolts and self-locking nuts with the bolt coming through the hull.🤔

You should also cover all of your external exposed hardware (ie the block attach nuts & bolts) with sealant. This will help reduce corrosion. Be careful wiping cables without good gloves on. A cable wire will tear up your hands and fingers. You'll never see it before you feel it! (you can count on an instant infection) (words from my personal mistakes)

Nice work guys. So I have a suggestion. It's a little bit involved, but will save you a ton of headache in the future and prolong the life of your equipment. Next time you take out the steering pulleys you should take the pins to a machine shop and have them drill lubrication holes in them and tap the hole in the end of the pin to 1/8-27. Then you can add push to connect fitting on the pin, connect tubing to it and run it to a more accessible location, add a grease fitting to the end of the tubing and then can pump grease down to the pulley without climbing down and dismantling them.

dont know if someone said this but when pumping out the oil, you can pump for a small while, 30 sec or so, then you have a vacume inside that will selfdrain the oil and you dont have to pump, since it felt like you was pumping threw the whole time, when it stops to drain, change the hight of the hose and pump a bit more untill you feel done

You should get shafts for steering pulleys drilled so that you can pump grease into the turning surfaces. If pin is 4 inches long, drill hole down from top about 3 inches. Then drill cross passages where the two pulley two sit. Tap for 1/8 npt at top of shaft. Then get some hydraulic hose with an 1/8 npt male thread on one end and 1/8 npt female end. Finally screw 1/8 npt male grease nipple into hose. Assemble pulley block, screw hose into top of shaft. Now every week you can pump a couple of pumps of grease into rotating pulleys. Place end of hose where you can access it easily. One other thing on pulley mount, you should have a tapped plate that has your mounting bolts going outside. The pulley internal mount should then be tapped on to this plate. Now you can remove pulleys, while under way, by just undoing 4 bolts that are in inside, and are threaded into mounting plate. It is easy to service the pulleys.

  • Roger Dilley
    Roger Dilley4 months ago

You should cut a hole in the aft deck directly over the steering sheaves and fit a spin out inspection plate that you can buy from most chandlers then you can lube and service it easily!

🤮 Omaze is a SCAM. They are a FOR PROFIT company posing as a charity fundraiser and it’s disgusting the Wynn’s are involved in this. (And defend the scammers). Omaze only passes on just 5% of every dollar they take in. That’s it. There isn’t a single charity fundraiser which is worse. Please, if you want to help and really care, donate to an actual real charity. And if you want to gamble, go to a casino since they have far better odds.

  • Tommy Holly

    Tommy Holly

@Gone with the Wynns Jason, I said Omaze claims to be a “Charity Fundraiser”. Their own website claims they take 85% of every dollar taken in and the other 15% gets passed to CAFA. (Who in turn take 75% of that!) Only just 5% gets passed to what they call a charity. Most Omaze fundraisers go to political activist groups like Black Lives Matter and others. This is directly from their webpage. So of course these small groups who usually don’t get anything like 5% which is better than 0%. You are actively engaging in a scam. There are no other charity fundraisers anywhere close to this bad.

  • Gone with the Wynns

    Gone with the Wynns

Omaze doesn't claim to be a charity - it is an online fundraising platform offering campaigns and merchandise which raise funds for various charitable causes.Their website gives a great explanation of how it all works and how much money from each type of campaign goes to the charity they're supporting. They tend to support smaller charities that people might not hear about otherwise, and those charities LOVE Omaze. Check it out here: www.omaze.com/pages/about-us Curious Minion

When you replace a filter like that one on the engine oil, it is wise to prefill the filter with oil before you screw it on. This avoids any component running dry while the filter is filled when you first start up after an oil change. Looking good guys. See you in NZ when you arrive.
