#BoatLife #Travel
We're starting our 6th year as liveaboard offshore sailors. And without a doubt, yacht insurance has been the most unexpected pain in the arse!
And it’s not just us, it’s every offshore USA flagged boat owner we talk to. Yacht insurance as an American sailor abroad just kinda sucks. Especially in the South Pacific (for some odd reason). I can’t offer up any words of wisdom on how to fix this mind-bending insurance system, but we have learned a lot on how to best present ourselves and our vessel.
Of course, we are NOT experts and there is still a lot we don’t know. But, if you’re a newbie buying your first boat or a fellow sailor struggling to get offshore, bluewater, around-the-world coverage, hopefully, this information will make the process suck a little less.
Here are the biggest tips we’ve learned about getting boat insurance: www.gonewiththewynns.com/how-to-yacht-insurance
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

You guys are the best, to take a dry subject like insurance and make it a fun video that I didn't want to end is TALENT. And the outtakes were hilarious. Love your videos.
Nikki is that a belly button piercing??? You got a naval, I mean navel piercing... lol. Looks great!!
So so glad he was able to laugh that off😂😂😂 he was so mad though, the way he said "iiii loooveee youuu toooo" 😂😂💀
Have you tried contacting a well known insurance company ie Lloyds of london and consider being sponsored by them and tell them about your site and to promote the company and sailing community they could get a lot of work through you by sponsorship. 🤞 best of luck.
I feel very inspired and humbled by your skillset in telling a story, shooting videos, editing, doing after effects, choosing music and soundeffects to underpin everything, and at the same time sharing insights, ups and downs of the life you have chosen.
One sailing couple is whining about boat insurance while another couple from Australia is saving refugees stranded off the coast of Africa,...First world problems.
Switch insurance providers every few years depending on down payment.
Say....how much is the insurance of the boat....?

Eh, why can't you insure it in another country?
I'll never be able to do what you guys do. But being able to live it with you guys is amazing. A small escape from reality for me and probably many other viewers. Thank you guys for this wonderful opportunity to live on Curiosity with you guys!
Where have you gone? I am worried
Just make sure you read the policy in full and not just assume you are covered for everything, especially if there are exclusions in the policy such as distance or locations. Many just assume they are insured for everything, not always the case.
Insurance is a scam created by the mafia. Best of luck to you both.
hope that you are okay as we have not heard from you guys? keep safe
I don't agree that your sailboat is your largest asset. That would be your creativity, your wanderlust, your experience, your ability to inspire and the loyal community who follow you. Even if your boat sank, whether it was insured or not, I think you guys would be able to start a new successful adventure from scratch. Premeditatio Malorum
Your videos are very well done and very informative. You guys deserve your success. You have provided valuable information to sailors. Best wishes on your journey.🙂
Competence is preferable to insurance.
I'm worried about you guys...where are you this week? Hope you're good and just taking a week off. Love.😊👍✌

The posts below me say one week ago That would be last thursday Hello??
Great opportunity: make your own insurance company: contact non-US bank in Pacific (you have a choice from Russia, China, HK, Taiwan, japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Australia, NZ you name it) and offer them to support your insurance company by offering insurance to small boats under 500K.
Hello . I'm guessing you took a week off to celebrate Easter. Hope your having a lovely time and I look forward to hearing from ya all soon. 🌸🌸🌸
Since discovering your channel I have watched so many of your adventures. Great stuff indeed! Keep the videos coming and enjoy every moment.
For all those worried (like I was) with no post this week & no update, Nikki & Jason decided to have a week off and they deserve a break when they want one 🙂 YT is their biggest social media platform, its where they started and would be their biggest income stream, many subscribers would go on from here to become patreons. I am sure the average subscriber would think of Nikki & Jason as friends or family, we care if things are going wrong, we worry if they don't turn up for our weekly Sunday visit from them. But this week I'm a little bit upset, they didn't mention anything about a week off on YT, they happily told people on other social media platforms they wouldn't be posting a video this week but not the subscribers themselves on YT. People have been posting worried if they are ok, and that's not fair!! A community post on YT takes no time at all & would have stopped subscribers (friends/family) worrying.
Jason, Nike, no update this week. What's happened? Is everything okay?

You may be doing this, but when I was in boating, I had my boat surveyed every 5 or so years when hauled for a bottom job. Not for insurance reasons, but for my peace of mind. Peace of mind in knowing my boat was sound or if there were problems they were found while on the hard, not 100 or more miles off shore. Should you do this it would look great on your boat resume in getting insurance. The older your boat, the more important this is. This is expensive, but in boating most everything is. Wishing you smooth seas and gentle breezes.
Re boat insurance. I understand your problem. Have you contacted some of the insurance of companies in the Caribbean? I had a client who had her St Thomas home insured with a Caribbean insurance company who paid in a matter of days after her home was destroyed by a hurricane.
Love Your hair .
Why are they no longer insuring US flagged boats? Are you all bad sailors?
Insurance is a very important practical topic. Thanks for covering it.
Keep wood bung plugs near Knott though hull and depth through hull. Seems they've been failing on allot of boats.
Love the videos but Jason, WOULD YOU PLEASE ADJUST YOUR SUNGLASSES?! I keep thinking maybe one of these days you will look in the mirror with them on and notice that they're not centered and way too high on your face but no. Another video where I can't do anything but look at how misaligned they are with your eyes. You will probably never see this but at least I got that off my chest.

I think our 10 year goal just went down the expensive insurance drain....
No one else is mentioning this any of it. Okay now; what happens if you slip in and out of a port, get provisioned and depart without going through the (mother may I ) process. I don’t want anything to do with the government or any stinking government. I have a feeling the FREEDOM I thought the sea would provide is literally jumping into the furnace of restrictions and rules.

@Gone with the Wynns the Mother May I; issue is the one issue that will turn me away from the sailing adventure. Being a Federal and state contractor all my life I’m sick; SICK and tired of stupid dictatorial , money grabbing government policies rules, permits, regulations and certifications. Formally being a NYC engineer every communication to every contractor ended in a threat for non compliance to any aspect of any city directive. The Commercial diving industry has become one huge never ending catalogue of certifications. Which; is nothing more than a tax to work and a legal way to restrict competition. I thought sailing the world would ensure I could at last experience real freedom. Well; I guess it doesn’t really exist anywhere now or maybe ever. Jules Verne’s A thousand leagues under the sea; was about escaping government rules. I was going to build a deep water submarine until I read the laws and restrictions related to manned submersibles. 😳☹️Lol The insurance thing blows me away. They dictate where you can and can’t be; a GD insurance company. Right or wrong. I’m the newbie here; I want to know it all before splashing a boat.

Most countries won't allow you in if you didn't clear the last country you entered.
Gone with the Wynns
If you leave a country without checking out, you will eventually overstay your Visa for that country and your passport can be flagged. When you try to check into a different country you may find that you have to go back to the one you snuck out of, legally exit, and face the legal consequences. It's just not worth it. And the days of sneaking in *and* out are over, unless you want to get arrested on suspicion of smuggling when they find you. Curious Minion
See how much it is to reflag the boat. Have you looked into Marshall Islands registry? Insurance may still be crazy but it may be easier to find a policy. I’m sure they still want a condition survey but who knows.
Gone with the Wynns

It isn't quite as cut & dried as that - see the pinned comment above. Curious Minion
This is giving me major flashbacks of my family applying for boat insurance this year. It always difficult but on top of the pandemic and the demands they were making to get approved- forced me to practice all the gratitude I could for my live aboard situation. Even though it’s really not as glamorous as some picture and the maintenance is never ending, it’s still worth it.
You two ALWAYS make me smile. Thank you.
Hate to break it to you but the insurance won’t pay if something does happen. Total scam. If you lose the boat those scumbags will find a way to weasel out of it.
Love the channel, thanks. Insurance has always seemed as a rort, however I have learned: 1. Home/house insurance is mainly needed as people say 'what if your house burns down?', so I noticed from viewing 1000's of accounts when I worked at ISPs and Telcos, is that some people pay $1000's more than needed. I learned home insurance with the minimum to cover a 100% fire loss with the highest premium is the most affordable rate and you're fully covered. Minor issues like theft or broken windows seldom occur and can be paid with the savings of lower home insurance. 2. Car insurance is a rort. I drive ~100,000 kilometres per year and have made 3 not-at-fault claims and learned car insurance don't want you after 3 claims (unfair as I was not at fault). This then costs you a lot as no other car insurer wants you for 5 years of being denied by a car insurer. To avoid this rort, I learned to not claim insurance. Small bingles can be paid yourself with the savings at cheap but good panel beaters and repairers. So, fully insure the car, with the highest premium as you plan not to claim (you need to be a safe driver, I recommend taking a defensive driving course), then the low rates save you money to spend with a cheap but good panel beater and repairer. 3. Flying/travel insurance, always take insurance, but again often a credit card or some other insurance covers you for air travel or medical expenses if you're sick. Big rort here too, as they often deny claims, which has personally shocked me in some tragic circumstances. 4. Boats I don't know. My brainstorm idea is the insurers cannot make money, hence the high prices. Perhaps the high prices could be better invested in disruptive/innovative stocks or Bitcoin, which most likely will make you money to cover a rare repair? 5. Be rational, rather than emotional with business/finance decisions. A once off example of 1 boat incurring a $1M cost rarely happens. However, I do like to find solutions for the majority and not some 'lucky' exception to the rule. The insurers are experts at mathematical probability and know the costs and dangers. I would like to see insurers' data on San Fran Cisco and Seattle (as well as 3 other cities around the world) which are predicted to be wiped out before 2070 thanks to the Juan De Fuca plate/San Andreas Fault.
Insurance companies are the worst crooks.
Concerning greasing the parts of your boat, did you guys ever consider ‘graphite grease’? It’s THE most sticky grease EVER..., trying to help you out
Are you two coming home if you get the chance? Or are you going to continue to travel?

Well there are very few flights in & out of Tonga at the moment (repatriation of citizens only because borders are still closed) so it's pretty impossible. Their next move will be sailing to either Australia or NZ whenever they can get an exemption to enter those countries. Just before Covid hit they spent several months in the USA, so I don't think another long visit is going to happen any time soon. And there's a circumnavigation to finish too! In case you missed it: www.gonewiththewynns.com/stranded-fiji Curious Minion
We sailed four boats from 24' - 42' as a couple from California throughout the South Pacific over 30 years and only had insurance when required by marinas except for one cyclone season that we stayed over in New Caledonia. Part of this was because we chose boats that we could own outright. If you have a bank loan you will always be limited by needing to have insurance. Maybe buying a boat you can afford makes more sense!
Gone with the Wynns

Don't forget America is a free country. I guess it's just depends on who you ask
Insurance co. Are about collecting big pay checks. Legal thieves.
Sounds like the same issue that's happening in the aviation industry. Only a few insurers left.
Kansas and South Dakota have many towns offering free homes. They give you residential and or commercial real property with the agreement that you make it nice or do business. Just make it pass code and look pretty. Cheap home cheap insurance.
Separate and divide asset protection and liability. 1. Incorporate business entity. Purchase professional liability. Divide responsibility of employees. 2. Have a firm establish a trust. Remove identity seperate from assets. 3. Cheap coverage for hull and the added assurance is likely found in home ownership.... Real property owners get the best rates.
Very informative and love the bloopers! 😂

Both your and Uma You Tube adventures have added to, our reduced social life due to covid, entertainment. Thank you guys. Now we want a seawind 1160 to sail the Caribbean. We have sailed Mandalay from Antigua to St Lucia and Grenada to St Lucia.
Problems of being rich, so sad.
There are 'other' sailing channels who like to brag about how cheap it is to live the cruising lifestyle. I'm guessing they do NOT have insurance. My ballpark estimate would be $3-4,000 a month, boat, insurance, food, mooring, fuel, etc. Am I close?
very sensible , I hope you never need to claim , and let's hope the absolute scum of the earth , industry known as insurance , pay you handsomely .
Blue dreams + gone with the wynns = 🤩. Sail right through a gnarly trip.
Actually Boat insurance might go down next year one reason is very simple we are just past our solar maximum the sun will quieten down hence the global weather will be less energetic. The other is vastly more complicated and has to do with how insurance actually works. Any insurance company is like a bookies you are betting something bad will happen they are betting it will not. They have a large team of odds makers called actuaries who calculate the odds they add their expenses of running the business making a profit and issue you a quote. Now most people think they keep all the money in a large pot the concept of "Shared Risk" pay out their costs and policies they have to and are left with hopefully a nice profit at the end of the year. They don't do that they cannot after all they might have to sell 20 policies to cover one big pay out. What they do like a bookie laying off a bet is they approach people to assume the risk they are called underwriters these can be big hedge funds or merely wealthy individuals say those with a million dollar house. Depending upon who your are underwriting for and indeed which pool of underwriters you are in they can call on you to cover their excess losses. Sometimes this might mean that their pay out is reduced but sometimes they have to fork over a lot to cover the insurance company losses. So for example the Evergreen ship has cost the insurance companies hundreds of millions but if no other global disasters this year like a Oil Spill they will get a payday maybe not as large as they were hoping. Now the reason for that complicated and convoluted explanation is that all Insurance companies are tied directly into how well the economy is doing. Obviously with Covid the answer should be not well except it is bouncing back in a K shaped recovery. Wealthy individuals and funds are bouncing back quickly one branch of the K unfortunately the other branch of the K is poor individuals so it is true the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. For you and we have finally got here the $12 Starbucks employee does not affect you but having a lot off money in the underwriting pool by next year should mean premiums go down as they are competing against other insurance companies who want your business.
Jason...quick question re internet... I’m watching a vid on the new STARLINK system ... wondering if that would work on a boat. Elon, here’s a damn good couple of normal people to do the beta test version with...

We are living in troubling times. It seems more and more obvious that the puppeteers are closing up the world for regular people to travel and live/move freely. Make insurance increasingly expensive and continually drop low end customers and if you want to travel, work, put your children in school or have access to a grocery store then you have to have vaccination papers. The elites behind the scenes are squeezing out the little people. I wonder if only luxurious super yachts were anchoring at Bora Bora, if there would have been the same push to decimate their access?
A successful life is challenges overcome. Congratulations guys!
Re 10:52, you don't have yo give names of persons but I dont see why you dont name the insurance which arr trying to stick it to us, or more like In Us. It's NOT COVID unless you mean the common cold. It's CoViD19. COVID19 is NOT COVID. People have gotten lazy and that kind of laziness has potential for harmor worse.Of course the MSM and crooked politicians don't mind the confusion to keep people in fear and control obviously, but just we ought not be them.
Do you actually believe that the insurance company paid a government a million dollars to fix a reef damaged by a private sail boat? More important: Do you really believe that the government that got the money actually used 100% of that money to some how fix a reef that nature itself will repair in time. Issue as I see it is people are not only buying into corruption and lies but they are willing to pay handsomely for it. Why should they stop Raping people on boat insurance if you are willing to pay for it? Why should they offer all inclusive coverage if folks will happily take less. Folks just gripe and whine then give in anyway. They know this. The more money people have the more they will pay sooner simply to make the problem go away. No way there was a million dollars damage caused to a reef by a private sailboat. No way a government spent 1,000,000 to repair a reef damaged by a private sail boat. No way an insurance company paid a million dollars to a government to repair a reef. But that story scared all boaters into buying insurance that governments profit directly from. It's like in Canada. Government created drone laws and then drone regulations. The laws say you can't fly within a KM of anything man made. You can't fly within 10 KM of an airport. You can't fly anywhere near people. And now they brought in the regulation. To fly something as simple as a Mavic pro they demand you have a license. The demand your drone be registered and they demand over 100,000 dollars worth of insurance even though you can't fly near anything or anyone. How many will sell drone insurance? What will it cost? Few will sell it and they'll charge a fortune. It's extortion enabled and enforced by the government and for that extortion they get tax dollars and fees charged to insurance to operate. It's all a big scam! It's protection racket exactly like the mob used to operate. let's face it! Even in this story of boat insurance the worst case scenario ever is if a government comes after you. No victims at all or necessary. From what I've seen of cruising videos probably 80% or more of all costs go directly to governments and their agencies. The governments get all or a cut of every single purchase you make and every single fee you pay and every single VISA you need and every single regulation requirement they demand. If more insurance companies pop up and compete to drop the price then the government will only allow certain insurance companies to sell or they'll only allow certain policies covering boats allowed in their waters. These governments and companies are corrupt. But folks just keep paying cause lord help us all if banding together to take a stand dares mess with any kind of plans. PS 100,000 boat's being paid out by insurance in a few years? A cruisers dinkiest dingy stolen or blown off deck is an insured boat.
